I couldn't sleep the night before this trip because I was really anxious about having made such a potentially life-altering decision, namely to "go public" in a big way with what's always been a local identity. I tossed & turned, finally arising three hours before my 6AM flight departure.
The flight was non-eventful with the only surprise being that NYC is on the OCEAN! I had no clue and had to ask somebody. A funny thing happened on my way to the studio: the handsome young driver gave me his cell phone number & said he'd love to take me out on the town if I had nothing better to do one of the nights I was there!
I tucked it in my purse, thanked him and allowed him to give me a hug which was rather "familiar". I thought to myself, "Well, isn't this proof of why they flew me here?"
I got to my gorgeous room on the 23rd floor of the NY Hilton and was shocked to see two men OUTSIDE my hotel window. Window-washers. Next, I felt a thrill upon finding this cute little frig all stocked with goodies just for ME! I promptly opened two tiny bottles of gin, poured some tonic, and sat down to celebrate my success. I then read the brochure on this small frig and learned that I'd just spent $20 for one drink.
The producer's sent Crystal to walk me back to the TV studios where I was greeted like a long lost relative with hugs and delight by the staff who'd read my web site. I was escorted into a TV taping studio where a producer told me to just "look natural" and answer her dozens of leading questions.
I'd already gone over my "story" in detail during a two-hour telephone interview, but they wanted to tape me telling it again, I guess. After about two hours, they asked if I'd dance for them. I had the forethought to bring along my favorite funky CD, so I danced for them.
I was back at my hotel by around 5, wondering what the hell I was supposed to do until bedtime in this strange big city all by myself. This problem was solved when one of the female producers phoned, telling me we were going dancing AND picking up young men to appear in the next day's taping session!
We must have walked at least 10 miles around NYC that night, stopping in various pubs to check out potential victims. She was really bold, but I'd been told that's how New Yorkers are anyway. We made a couple of "hits" but could find no dancing anywhere. I collapsed into bed almost 24 hours after arising in Mpls. I don't think I've EVER been awake for 24 hours in my life before.
